The University of Torino in collaboration with the Implant Research Center of Drexel University is pleased to announce the 6th International UHMWPE Meeting, which will be convened at the Congress Center "Unione Industriale," in Torino Italy, on Thursday and Friday, October 10-11, 2013. The UHMWPE meeing in being organized in collaboration between the Univeristy of Torino and Drexel University. The purpose of the 6th UHMWPE meeting in Torino is to bring together engineers, scientists, and clinicians from academia and industry and present leading edge research on advancements in medical grade UHMWPE technology and clinical applications.

Principal Organizers: The meeting is organized by Pierangiola Bracco (President) and Steve Kurtz (Vice President). Prof. Luigi Costa is the President Emeritus of the Scientific Committee for the Conference.

Social Program: The organizers strongly believe that international collaborations flourish not only in the formal structure of a meeting but more often in the unpredictable encounters of informal social gatherings. To that end, we will be organizing a gala dinner on evening of Thursday, October 10. The cost of the social program will be covered in the conference registration fee.

Plan for CORS in Venice: The UHMWPE meeting in Torino is also being co-organized in collaboration with the Combined Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Societies (CORS 2013) which will convene immediately after the UHMWPE meeting in nearby Venice, Italy, on Sunday through Wednesday, October 13-16. 2013. Torino and Venice are linked by a convenient and inexpensive intercity train service with multiple departures each day; travel time between the two cities is approximately 4 hours.

The 9th World Biomaterials Congress will be convening a dedicated UHMWPE Symposium, which is being organized by Steve Lin and Stuart Goodman. The 9th WBC will take place from June 1-5, 2012, in Chengdu, China. Click here for more details about the WBC.

We are pleased to announce that the 5th UHMWPE International Meeting will be convened at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, 19104, USA, on Thursday and Friday, September 22 and 23, 2011.  For more details about the conference topics, see the preliminary agenda.

MEETING VENUE: The meeting will take place in the Mitchell Auditorium and Atrium in Bussone Center, located on Drexel campus at 3140 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. A campus map and directions can be found here.

REGISTRATION: Click here to register online for the meeting. Meeting registration also includes continental breakfast and coffee breaks which will be provided on site both days of the meeting. Lunch will also be provided on September 22. For the first 170 registrants, a special reception/gala dinner will be held on September 22. The reception and dinner will be held at the Upper Egyptian Gallery at the University of Pennslvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. Bus transportation will be provided from the meeting venue and the museum before and after the reception. To reserve a ticket for the dinner and reception for one or more guests, please register the guest online as a student.

WHERE TO STAY: To take advantage of all that Philadelphia has to offer in terms of night life, historic tourist attractions, and fine dining, we recommend that you select a hotel in Center City. Several hotels have a negotiated Drexel corporate rate which you can take advantage of by calling the hotel and requesting the Drexel rate. You can reach the conference venue from Center City with a short (~2 km) cab ride or by using the subway (SEPTA) Frankford-Market line. The closest SEPTA subway stop to the conference venue is at 30th and Market.

One hotel within walking distance of the conference venue in University City is the Sheraton University City (close in proximity but not overly nice). My recommendation is to stay in center city at the Omni which is in the historic district.

We are pleased to announce that the 4th UHMWPE International Meeting Update will be convened by the University of Torino, Italy, for September 16-18, 2009. As in previous years, the meeting will include two main parts: one basic research module, open for papers and oriented to gather cutting-edge research on UHMWPE; and a second part oriented to clinical aspects and discussion. The program for the 3-day meeting can now be found on the meeting website. 

The conference will be focused on the following themes: (1) Oxidation of UHMWPE; (2) Stabilization of UHMWPE; (3) Crosslinking of UHMWPE; (4) Mechanical properties of UHMWPE; (4) UHMWPE debris; and (5) Alternative materials and alternative bearings. Selected papers from this meeting will be published as a Symposium in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. Additional details about the conference can now be found at the conference website. On December 8-10, 2003, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the National Institutes of Health Office of Medical Applications of Research are sponsoring a consensus development conference to explore and assess the current scientific knowledge regarding Total Knee Replacement (TKR). During the first 1 1/2 days of the conference, experts will present the latest TKR research findings to an independent panel. After weighing all of the scientific evidence, the panel will prepare a consensus statement. Orthopedic surgeons and researchers at the University of Turin, Italy, will be convening a one-day symposium about UHMWPE on Friday, September 19, 2003. The meeting will be held at the Aula Magna del Centro Traumatologico Ortopedico, Via Zuretti, 29 - Torino, Italy. The ASTM will be convening a Symposium on crosslinked and thermally treated UHMWPE from 12:45 PM to 6:30 PM on Tuesday, November 5, 2002, and from 8:15 AM to 12:00 PM on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at the Fontainebleau Hilton Resort and Towers, Miami Beach, FL.

The European Society for Biomaterials Meeting in London, England, will feature a technology transfer workshop on Wednesday, September 12, 2001, on standard test methodologies for UHMWPE. It will be chaired by Dr. Fraser Buchanan.

At the F04 Committee Meeting for the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) in Phoenix, AZ, a half-day workshop was held on May 8, 2001, to review standard test methods for conventional UHMWPE and to explore how these methods may need to be updated or augmented for crosslinked UHMWPE. It was co-chaired by Drs. Steven Kurtz, Ray Gsell, and Joshua Jacobs. Powerpoint presentations for selected workshop speakers are now available for viewing in HTML format.

The Society for Biomaterials Meeting in St. Paul, MN, featured a half-day workshop on April 25, 2001, devoted to the latest mechanical and chemical characterization techniques for UHMWPE. It was chaired by Dr. Avram Allan Edidin. Powerpoint presentations for selected workshop speakers are now available for viewing in HTML format.
