4th UHMWPE International Meeting in Torino, Italy

We are pleased to announce that the 4th UHMWPE International Meeting Update will be convened by the University of Torino, Italy, for September 17 & 18, 2009. As in previous years, the meeting will include two main parts: one basic research module, open for papers and oriented to gather cutting-edge research on UHMWPE; and a second part oriented to clinical aspects and discussion. NIH Consensus Development Conference for Knee Replacement

On December 8-10, 2003, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the National Institutes of Health Office of Medical Applications of Research are sponsoring a consensus development conference to explore and assess the current scientific knowledge regarding Total Knee Replacement (TKR). During the first 1 1/2 days of the conference, experts will present the latest TKR research findings to an independent panel. After weighing all of the scientific evidence, the panel will prepare a consensus statement. This meeting will be held at the Natcher Conference Center at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda MD. For further details, please visit the conference website or send an email. |

Orthopedic surgeons and researchers at the Univerisity of Turin, Italy, will be convening a one-day symposium about UHMWPE on Friday, September 19, 2003. The meeting will be held at the Aula Magna del Centro Traumatologico Ortopedico, Via Zuretti, 29 - Torino, Italy. New Test Methods for Evaluating the Performance of Conventional and Crosslinked UHMWPE at the American Society for Testing and Materials

At the F04 Committee Meeting for the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) in Phoenix, AZ, a half-day workshop was held on May 8, 2001, to review standard test methods for conventional UHMWPE and to explore how these methods may need to be updated or augmented for crosslinked UHMWPE. It was co-chaired by Drs. Steven Kurtz, Ray Gsell, and Joshua Jacobs. Powerpoint presentations for selected workshop speakers are now available for viewing in HTML format.

The Society for Biomaterials Meeting in St. Paul, MN, featured a half-day workshop on April 25, 2001, devoted to the latest mechanical and chemical characterization techniques for UHMWPE. The Orthopedic Research Society Meeting, held at the Moscone Center, San Fransisco, CA, from February 25-28, 2001, featured a podium session of six talks devoted to UHMWPE, as well as two poster sessions devoted Implant Wear (11 Posters) and Polyethylene (20 Posters).

NIH/AAOS Wear Symposium

In October 2000, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the National Institutes of Health organized a symposium to address the problem of wear in total joint replacements. A PDF document summarizing recent research into the relationship between design, mechanics, materials, and wear was drafted by Drs. Edidin and Kurtz for reference use during the workshop breakout sessions. It has been made available on this web site solely due to possible interest on the part of other researchers. The summary only reflects the research and opinions of the authors. |
